MALAYSIA'S ICONIC RAINFOREST RESORT LAUNCHES ‘CONSCIOUSLY DATAI'

An inspiring array of activities allows guests to actively contribute to driving positive change

Renowned luxury rainforest resort, The Datai Langkawi, has launched 'Consciously Datai', a package designed to inspire participation by guests in its vital regeneration projects and empower them to make a positive contribution. Engaging activities encourage a deeper connection with nature and support guests in discovering the serenity of the rainforest, encompassing native tree planting, upcycling workshops, a behind-the-scenes tour of the resort's sustainability operation, and expert-led jungle walks.

The new package helps guests delve deeper into The Datai Langkawi’s continued commitment to responsible stewardship of its surroundings, allowing them to contribute towards supporting the local ecosystem by planting a sapling from the resort’s Native Tree Nursery in the rainforest surrounding the resort.

A dedicated behind-the-scenes tour reveals the secrets of the resort's expansive waste management facilities. Guests will first visit the sorting and upcycling centre to observe the waste segregation and upcycling process, before proceeding to the organic wealth centre, where non-recyclable solid waste is converted into non-toxic vapour and ash, as well as the water bottling plant, which produces all of the resort’s drinking water. The journey continues to the permaculture garden, which has been carefully cultivated to work in tune with the systems and cycles of nature. Here, guests explore how the garden's zero-waste processes provide fresh seasonal produce for the kitchens, alongside medicinal herbs.

The 'Consciously Datai' package also includes a choice of either a soothing Forest Bathing Ritual, or an invigorating trek to Langkawi’s idyllic Crystal Creek, immersing guests in the beauty of the ancient rainforest. A gentle, mindful walk into the lush rainforest at the foot of the Machinchang mountain formation, the Forest Bathing Ritual embraces the ancient and traditional Malaysian practice of Mandi Embun, meaning ‘bathing in forest dew’, which is believed to enhance wellness through its meditative benefits. Alternatively, guests travelling with children aged 4 and above can join The Datai Langkawi resident naturalists on a serene walk to Crystal Creek, a rejuvenating natural forest pool where they can take a refreshing dip in the softly babbling waters. Both activities provide an opportunity to see, hear and feel the rainforest and its abundance of wildlife.

An upcycling workshop at the resort’s dedicated space, The Lab, introduces guests to artisanal craft-making. Provoking thought and discussion on how populations can live more sustainably, these sessions see new products, such as soap and candles, created from old materials that might otherwise have been discarded.  Re-using products in surprising and innovative ways offers insight and education into the role recycling plays in the fight against landfill sites and global waste.

10 percent from all bookings of the 'Consciously Datai' package goes directly to supporting the resort's sustainability and conservation trust, The Datai Pledge*.

On the launch of the new package, Stephane Duvacher, General Manager at The Datai Langkawi, comments: "Through immersing travellers in our educational experiences and sustainability practices, we've often found guests become strong ambassadors for regenerative travel, spreading awareness of the fragility of our ecosystems and humanity’s role in protecting them.  We're delighted to be launching the new Consciously Datai experience, making it even easier for our guests to connect and engage with regenerative travel and the importance of preserving the natural world.

"Since the resort opened over 30 years ago, we've been dedicated to responsible stewardship of our incredible surroundings, both in terms of nature and community - a commitment which was formalised in 2019 with the creation of The Datai Pledge, a private trust dedicated to being an active instigator for positive change."

ABOUT THE DATAI PLEDGE

In 2020, The Datai Pledge was established as a Private Trust. It is founded on the belief that travel has the potential to be transformative; not only for the traveller but also for the host community. The Datai Pledge was created on the premise of protecting biodiversity and supporting the local community of Langkawi, for today and the future. It comprises four pillars: Pure For The Future, Fish For The Future, Wildlife For The Future, and Youth For The Future, working to make the resort’s business operations more sustainable, and support marine life, terrestrial wildlife and local youth, respectively. For guests of The Datai Langkawi, The Datai Pledge aims to create educational experiences that inspire and uphold our collective role in responsible living on a wider global level. The Datai Pledge’s vision is to integrate conservation and sustainability into the business operations, company ethos and guest experience of The Datai Langkawi and future properties, to protect and help regenerate the rich biodiversity and enable the local community to thrive. The Datai Pledge is working towards this goal by developing a robust programme with local non-governmental organisations, social enterprises and community partners.
